English Dub Review: The Great Cleric “A Threat in the Boss Room”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Luciel makes progress at his new job, potentially even getting in over his head. He’s up against a strange encounter in the boss room and an even more mysterious one afterward…

Our Take:
Luciel survived his first day at Shurule’s guild headquarters, but it wasn’t easy. He’s tasked with exorcising the ghosts and zombies with his deacon and exorcist abilities given by Granhart. After taking a small break that lasted a week, Luciel continues his duty as a bonafide exorcist, but what he doesn’t know is that the ghouls in the massive stinky labyrinth are the least of his problems.
The episode sees Luciel gaining a Holy Silver sword and spear from the church shop run by Cattleya, thanks to the zombie crystals he collected. Afterward, we see Luciel fighting through the remaining floors in the labyrinth. When he reaches floor 10, Luciel finds a door leading to the dungeon’s boss, a Wight, which can negate any magic spell with its wand. Unfortunately, it means that Luciel can’t use his magic while in the boss room, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for him, as he managed to trounce it with his sword and spear. Upon returning the loot he collected, including the Wight’s robe and wand, Luciel gets a chance encounter with the Pope, who informs him that the Wight is Ozanario, an exorcist who disappeared years ago. Luciel then sells these items to the Pope for a magic sack, making it easier for him to collect more stuff.
Despite still being at level one, Luciel has continued to exceed people’s expectations by defeating a level ten boss, especially Cattleya, who seemed suspicious about his actions. As far as I can tell, I’ve been getting similar vibes from other anime shows involving OP level-one characters based on this episode alone. While it doesn’t offer much regarding the formula, “A Threat in the Boss Room” continues to make the show’s second half a bit watchable due to Luciel’s humorous expressions. However, it also left me confused as to how Luciel can handle a sword and spear easily but can’t even land a single punch on Brod. Hopefully, that part gets cleared up sooner or later.
