English Dub Review: My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1 “Time for the Harvest Festival”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The Ryota family takes a day off to attend the Harvest Festival. However, multiple scenarios occur that threaten their peaceful break. Afterward, the gang encounters a strange phenomenon that causes the dungeon monsters not to drop anything for the adventurers except Ryota. As Ryota searches inside the Nihonium dungeon for answers, he encounters a formidable ghostly foe responsible for the cause.

Our Take:

The Harvest Festival has been teased in the ninth episode, in which people use the dungeon items to fight spawned monsters in a gladiatorial fashion. Thankfully, it didn’t take us too long to get to that part, as this week’s episode has the Ryota family attending this special gathering. I mentioned earlier that I won’t be surprised if the festival might culminate the show’s first season. Now that we’re at this point, it’s easy to say I wasn’t shocked that I could be right. However, the conclusion of this episode proved otherwise.

The episode’s first half is basically what the title suggests, and that’s Ryota and the others spending the day at the Harvest Festival. Amid their relaxing day, they encountered multiple situations that derailed their tranquil day off. One involves Ryota and Alice helping Emily level up faster by defeating a stray mouse monster that drops massive amounts of experience points. It also drops another bullet for Ryota, increasing the strength of the following bullet he uses afterward. The gang also confronted a stray goblin that grows with each hit it absorbs with the assistance of Neptune, who’s still determined to get Ryota to join his group. Finally, Ryota and Celeste participate in and win the stray gladiator competition, which rewards them with a bag of fireworks.

Like the previous episodes, the first half relies on its tranquil tone and charm to provide enough serenity to maintain my enjoyment, even if some elements were rushed. However, the episode’s second half is where my interest peaked a bit. This is due to Alice hearing a noise coming from the Nihonium dungeon. More importantly, the dungeon monsters have suddenly stopped dropping items for the adventurers. Well, all of them except Ryota. It was eventually revealed that the Nihonium dungeon master was responsible for this change, with Ryota attempting to face her alone.

“Time for the Harvest Festival” offers the usual light-heartedness we expect from the previous ten episodes, mainly in the first half, for better or worse. However, the second half finally got the series going regarding the stakes Ryota is facing. It’s too bad it saved that part until the last minute based on how I felt about My Unique Skill so far. Regardless, Ryota might have met his match in the form of the ghostly dungeon master, and it will take a lot more than his powerful bullets to tame this boss.
