English Dub Season Review: Oshi no Ko Season One

Overview:

A doctor and his recently-deceased patient are reborn as twins to a famous Japanese musical idol and navigate the highs and lows of the Japanese entertainment industry as they grow up together through their lives.

Our Take:

If you’re coming from my Urusei Yatsura you’re going to notice that this is almost the exact opposite of that review. I loved the manga of this series and much like Spy x Family, I hoped that anime fans would love it as much as I did. I’d say that my hopes were fulfilled because the first episode of the series reached number one on MAL which is a pretty big deal. I don’t think it is anymore but still a tough list to crack with Full Metal Alchemist being number one for a long time.

As I thought more about I think this first season is only eleven episodes long because the first episode was an hour and a half long. So in runtime, it still ends up being about twelve to thirteen episodes.

This show became recognized globally when the opening song “Idol” by YOASOBI hit number one on the global billboard charts. YOASOBI is a fantastic artist and has a multitude of anime openings under their belt and something tells me they will get a lot more after this success.

As per usual Sentai uses their own voice talent and it seems like they’ve hit on some up-and-coming stars. The main character duo of Aqua and Ruby Hosino are played by Jack Stansbury and Alyssa Marek respectively. They do a fantastic job and I think this could be their breakout role in the anime world. Especially with this getting a second season and with its popularity I could see it going for a long time.

Imagine that you were a Britney Spears superfan and for some reason, you met an unfortunate end. Now that you’re dead you can be reincarnated, and you happen to get reincarnated as her son. That is essentially the start of this story. It’s a uniquely “anime” start to a series but after that initial weirdness, it settles into a pretty normal series. Sure, Aqua and Ruby being reincarnated and remembering their past lives plays a part in the story but it is a revenge story that delves into the dark side of fame.

There is very little negative I have to say about this series. In fact, the most negative thing I can say is that it was too short. Which is a pretty good thing to say about a series and there has already been a second season announcement. I cannot recommend this series to people enough, it is one of the funniest series running right now in both anime and manga form. If you can get over the initial odd start (If you’ve watched much anime at all it isn’t even that weird) you are going to be in for a fantastic time. The first season is done airing and you can binge it all now on Hi-Dive and I highly recommend that you do.
