English Dub Season Review: Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage

To make this as less confusing as possible for someone who’s started watching this “Season” and is left confused, this is NOT Season 2, but rather, it’s a series of specials covering side material from the manga that didn’t entirely fit into the constraints of Season 1. At its core, it’s more an anthology of little self-contained culmination of the manga’s side stories that expand on the series’ lore and flesh out the characters. They are not all closely related to each other, and the order they’re watched at least mostly doesn’t matter. On the Technical side, The series continues to be produced by Wit Studio and is directed by Yōsuke Hatta, with Taku Kishimoto supervising the series’ scripts, Atsuko Nozaki designing the characters, and MAYUKO composing the series’ music, the band “People1” performing the opening theme “Gold”, while Aimer performed the ending theme “Atemonaku” (Aimlessly). While the first season was an overarching story that primarily focused on Bojji’s growth and development, this one has more freedom to explore Bojji’s and Kage’s characters as well as the world in which they are evolving. The characters again are the main highlight of the series, each one has their own goals, personality, and identity. I love every character in this anime because each of them felt unique and alive. This one stood out for me because I love anime that focuses on characters. However, the biggest flaws of the show itself are that most if not all of these stories do NOTHING, they don’t change how decisions the characters make come off, don’t give any more information about a character’s motivations or background, and it doesn’t have anything to say about the world. There were a few genuinely great episodes thrown in here that continued the plot or supplied important context, but there was a large amount of pointless filler, as well. It occasionally does one of these, yes, but it’s rare and won’t be likely to affect the main show in the long run. Also, it would’ve been a better idea than making this a full pseudo-season would have been to make a special or two where they included the good ideas that they had, and eliminated half-baked and filler ones. It would have made it look a lot less like they were just trying to throw anything out there to tide us over until the true season two.Overall, if you enjoyed Season 1, you’ll probably enjoy this. You may not be hanging on for dear life waiting for the next episode as there aren’t cliffhangers to these specials, but you’re still getting Bojji and the whole crew, and you’re getting a Ton of fantastic worldbuilding. But as a whole, “Treasure Chest of Courage” is here to bridge any possible narrative gaps to quell the angry manga fanboys who complain about recent Anime/Manga adaptations cutting stuff out. Assuming there are more storylines, I didn’t hate it. But hopefully, later seasons become a reality given how colorful and imaginative it all was…
