English Dub Review: Oshi no Ko “First Time”

Overview:

Focused on revenge, Aqua underestimated Akane and gave the talented actress a way to win his heart. If love is a game, Akane is playing for keeps and Kana is falling behind.

Our Take:

Please allow me to step up on my soapbox for a moment before we get to the review. It came out that Kristen McGuire was being harassed for her role as Akane in Oshi no Ko. Whether you like her performance or not that is never okay. If you’re a fan of Oshi no Ko and were one of the ones doing that then you completely lost the point of what the episode and in some ways, the series is about. Whether it’s idols, actors, or VAs they put everything they have into their performances and to demean someone because it doesn’t fit your ideal is just shitty.

Akane embodies everything that Ai was which is exactly Aqua’s type. So much so that he kissed her on the set of the show and he and Akane became the talk of social media. I wouldn’t necessarily say that this series is known for its romance but there is a definite love triangle established now between Akane and Kana. We will have to see if Aqua actually has feelings or if this is all just a part of his plan.
