English Dub Review: Oshi no Ko “Buzz”

Overview:

Left reeling in the immediate aftermath, Akane’s costars unite in friendship and purpose: they will clear their friend’s name. They owe her nothing less.

Our Take:

You know an anime has “anime of the year” potential when it gets greenlit for a second season before the first has even finished airing. Oshi no Ko has been one of my favorite manga that I’ve been following since its first chapters back in 2020. It has an amazing duo of author and illustrator working on it with Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari respectively. Aka’s most popular work has to be Kaguya-sama and Mengo’s would be Scum’s Wish. That is before Oshi no Ko because I think this is going to be wildly popular for a long time. It has such a fun and unique premise.

The last episode dealt with cyberbullying and the fallout when Akane attempted to kill herself until Aqua saved her. This anime dealt with the sensitive topic really well in my opinion, showing how easy it is to succumb to depression. But Aqua and everyone else on the show band together to help her and clear her name online.

Akane decides to “adopt a persona” while filming so if something similar should happen again she can more easily brush it off. But when that persona is alarmingly similar to Aqua’s ideal woman/ mother Ai Hoshino how will he react?
