English Dub Review: Dead Mount Death Play “The Sacred Place”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
As a string of criminals, cops, and assassins converge on his building, the Corpse God finally decides to take action. How far will the necromancer go to defend his new home? And what new attention will his actions draw in a world without magic?

Our Take:
This series has become a roller coaster of an experience for me. There were plenty of solid moments that make this a unique take on the isekai formula known as the “reverse isekai” genre. However, it also has a few stuff that could’ve made it face death early, including its complex plot elements. The worst offender is that a few episodes require subtitles to understand specific plot points, and as someone who didn’t get them immediately as they debuted, it’s as dreadful as meeting the Grim Reaper.
Regardless, we’ve reached the conclusion of the show’s first cour before it goes on a three-month hiatus. Was it thrilling enough to close the season’s first half? Sort of, but it does intrigue me about what we’ll expect for its upcoming second cour. “The Sacred Place” has the Corpse God putting his necromancer powers to good use again to confront the people surrounding his building. One of them includes Yatsu, who encounters a young woman dressed in the same white cloak as the Fire Breathing Bug.
Meanwhile, Shoya continues to battle Solitaire on the roof, with the latter hiding his fearfulness with a false sense of bravery. Again, if you enjoy his brand of humor in the previous episode, you’ll unsurprisingly be pleased with his amusing attempts to escape the fight.
The battle is then interrupted by the long-awaited return of Lemmings, who’s targeting Solitaire while remaining unharmed by Shayu’s abilities. Amid the confrontation, the Corpse God uses his “invisible hands” trick to catch Lemmings and Solitaire, but the latter slipped through their fingers, meaning we’ll see this trickster again in the second cour. But, of course, that’s not the worst part that the Corpse God should worry about.
In addition to Solitaire’s escape, the Corpse God’s powers are shown to the public, catching the attention of everyone who views them. That includes the mysterious group of people watching it live on television. It looks like this particular organization, along with the Fire Breathing Bug, might serve as the antagonists for the season’s second half. The episode alone may not have answered some critical questions to coincide with the small glimpse of the Corpse God’s past, including his teacher. However, it intrigues me enough to look forward to the show’s second cour in October.
