Overview: Splitting off from the main group, Gabimaru (Alejandro Saab) ascertains the threat of the Tensen in Zhu Jin. (Ian Sinclair, Michelle Rojas)

Our Take: The episode largely focuses on Gabimaru and Zhu Jin’s brawl in a pulse-pounding test of strength, testing each other’s physical ceiling and capabilities. There’s an otherworldly level of speed and power to their exchanges, visually, that sets it apart from the other combatants the Tensen have taken on. The tree Tensen’s realization that Gabimaru is a different breed adds to the intensity in pushing their limits. Mei’s saving Gabimaru using Tensen abilities, teases how important of a connection she has to them along with her potential power.

When attention shifts away from the battle, it allows new insights into the Tensen’s vulnerabilities, and reliance on the elixir. Hoko’s role is pivotal, explaining the multiple personalities that splintered off from Rien, getting Sagiri and co. up to speed. Thankfully, he is not solely an exposition machine either. His trauma and loss as a father adds a touching layer to his connection with Mei. It makes his eventual loss of cognitive function for faith towards Tensen even more of a disheartening fate.

With Gabimaru and Mei worse for wear, their next battle is upon them from a new prisoner and Asaemon. It’ll be interesting how he combats them coming out of his previous battle worse for wear.
