English Dub Review: Hell’s Paradise: “Flowers and Offerings”

Overview: Gabimaru (Alejandro Saab), Sagiri (Marisa Duran), Yuzuriha (Jill Harris), and Senta (Jordan Dash Cruz) meet a tree being, who’s looking after a young girl in a village. They uncover important information about the duo’s relationship, but also the dangers that await them on the island.

Our Take: Shinsenkyo’s few inhabitants are a surprise in how unhostile they are, compared to all the other killer creatures, at least. Even more shocking is the little girl’s sumo wrestler strength and cute dynamic with her sentient tree protector. The little one creates a wholesome opportunity for Sagiri to display her kinder side towards children and her mute situation.

The tree’s explanation of the island’s sections and the elixir being located in the immortals domain, transitions smoothly into Aza and Toma’s situation. The brothers’ battle highlights the Tensen’s unexpected abilities in their gender morphing and regenerative capabilities. With how easily they’re tossed aside, the stage is set for an inevitably gruesome battle.

Speaking of rough, Gabimaru sure as heck ain’t a peach, especially when it comes to children. Yui, on the other hand, most certainly is and how that relationship continues to define him is the joy of his journey. One of those being how he learns to properly savor relaxation time and have it serve him in battle. Most importantly, his wife’s warmth and beauty creates a sweet moment between him and the little girl. Their bond is incredibly endearing in how Gabimaru empowers the beauty of her own scars.

Sagiri’s recognition of Gabimaru’s vulnerability feels repetitive though. They’ve already shared seminal moments that define how their perception of each other is evolving with this retreading old ground. Hopefully, future progression doesn’t solely feel as if they’re running in circles.
