HBO MAX Renamed to MAX: Slight Updates To Adult Animation Projects Featuring Rick and Morty and Creature Commandos

Set to debut on May 30th is the rebranding of WB Discovery’s MAX streaming service. As part of today’s relaunch announcement, the streamer has given some quick news about two upcoming adult animated series that are slated to be on the way.

For starters, the rumored subtitled-only Rick and Morty: The Anime is slated to premiere on both the MAX streaming service and Adult Swim sometime in Summer 2023.

Based on the Emmy-award-winning adult animated series, Rick and Morty: The Anime is a 10-episode adventure debuting on Adult Swim and HBO Max. Sano previously directed two anime shorts, “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider” and “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil),” which received widespread fan and critical acclaim upon release, generating over 10 million combined views on Adult Swim digital platforms.

While celebrated anime director (and Rick and Morty superfan) Sano will adapt themes and events of the main series, Rick and Morty: The Anime will stand on its own as an original work. “The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion,” Sano explains. “It’s such a life affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception.” He adds, “I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

Like Sano’s previous Rick and Morty anime shorts, the series is from Telecom Animation Film (Lupin the IIIrd SeriesShenmue the AnimationTower of God).

Next, the full voice cast for the animated adaptation of the DC Comics series Creature Commandos has been announced and among the ranks you can expect to hear the likes of Sean Gunn who will voice Weasel, Frank Grillo is Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein and Steve Agee as John Economos. The James Gunn-written series will have seven episodes that will follow a black ops team created by a gaggle of former prisoners. In the comics the purpose was for everyone to fight Nazis, but the premise will be updated for current times.
