Review: The Legend of Vox Machina “The Fey Realm” ;”Echo Tree” ;”A Test of Pride”

Overview:

After escaping from the black dragon Umbrasyl, Vox Machina is split up. Half of the party finds themselves lost in another dimension, the mysterious Fey Realm. They encounter strange dangers as they seek to recover the next Vestige of Divergence. Meanwhile, the other half of the party searches for a way to heal their cursed teammate.

In the Fey Realm, Vox Machina unexpectedly discovers the city of Syngorn and meets Vax and Vex’s father. After the emotional encounter, Vox Machina journeys deeper into the Fey Realm, searching for the next Vestige of Divergence – the Fenthras Bow. To acquire it, they must confront an ancient and powerful archfey. Meanwhile back in Tal’dorei, Scanlan and Pike attempt to nurse Grog back to health.

Knowing that the Titanstone Knuckles are in the city of Westruun, Pike, and Scanlan come up with a plan to get them from their current owner, Grog’s uncle, Kevdak. But Grog, weakened by Craven Edge’s curse and haunted by his last encounter with his uncle, questions whether he is strong enough of mind, or body, to confront Kevdak.

Our Take:

The Legend of Vox Machina has always been a funny show. They inject comedy into just about every scene even sometimes when it’s not needed. But this season has been a bit different, it still has those moments of levity and comedy but it seems decidedly more serious. We are learning more about the characters’ pasts and they are growing before our eyes.

The character growth has been fantastic, especially for Scanlan and Grogg in my eyes. Grogg had an evil sword that in order to save his friends (and himself) he had to destroy. When he does something bad happened and now his muscles are gone. If you know anything about Grogg you would know that he is like 95% muscle. Seeing how he comes to terms with this new development and still chooses to do the right thing was pretty awesome.

Scanlan is your typical womanizing bard but there is clearly more under the surface. He still reverts to his comedy and lewd ways because it’s how he copes but you can see he’s more determined to do what’s right. One of the main reasons for this to me is his feelings towards Pike with one of the blossoming romances in the group.

There was a tiny bit of romance in the first season where Vax told Keyleth he was in love with her. Other than that their relationship is seemingly going nowhere for the time being. But there is something seemingly going on between not only Scanlan and Pike but also Vex and Percy. If you know me you know that I love romance so these developments are something I’m keeping my eye on with great interest.

The Legend of Vox Machina continues to be fantastic. The first season was good but this second season is heading toward something great. The only thing I’m worried about is that next week is the last three episodes and there is a lot to cover so I think this is going to end on a cliffhanger which I’m not a huge fan of. But hopefully, I’m proven wrong and this arc is concluded. A third season has already been confirmed so at the very least we are going to get more of these fantastic characters soon.
