English Dub Review: To Your Eternity “The Self, Worn Down”

Overview

Fushi fends off the Nokkers miles away from Renril, but the Nokkers had already devised a more cunning plan.

Our Take

So far, Fushi’s plan seems to actually work, at least against their initial wave. This was like watching a siege trying to break through a wall. However this comes with a cost as his mission to protect every single life causes him to go beyond his limits. This has an adverse effect because Fushi passes out and way more lives were lost now than what would have been if he let the others fight more. But I can’t fault him for doing what others would in his position.

On the subject, I thought it was pretty laughable how they gave certain characters off-screen deaths. There were previous episodes where they all got actual backstories and they get off-screen deaths? And then later an unsatisfying “flashback” to explain how they died? That annoyed me. I hope any deaths in the remaining five episodes are handled way better.

Overall, the story is mostly suffering from the backwards formula of telling, and not showing. The production also feels like it’s starting to degrade since there wasn’t a whole lot of movement, and a few stills as well. It also really lacked direction when it comes to emotional moments here and there, but I somehow welcome this since season one was guilty of romanticizing depression, while the deaths have actual meaning without it feeling forced this time around. Time can only tell what direction this story will take next in later episodes…
