WB Discovery’s James Gunn And Channing Dungey Drop Hints On DC Animation’s Future

Arguably one of the more successful tent poles for DC Entertainment is that of DC’s Animation unit, with adult animation being a big part of the reason why. Between feature-length movies, TV shows for HBO MAX, and more, there’s a bunch to watch if you’re a fan of DC’s adult animation category. Granted, the company canceling the animated reboot of the famed Batman: Caped Crusader wasn’t a good look, but with the recent passing of Kevin Conroy, I’m not sure I’m in the mood for other Batman-voice actors right now.

James Gunn recently took the reigns of Co-CEO for DC studios which now includes the animation division and given that the director is just coming off of a Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special that featured some of the Ravagers animated rotoscope-style as influenced by Ralph Bakshi, courtesy of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, we have a lot to look forward to from James as he departs Marvel for DC full-time. James recently noted on Twitter that the future of the DC Universe will be connected, animation included, probably somewhat similar to how the MCU does it now, but we can still expect more standalone content ala Harley Quinn.

But, DC isn’t just about Batman and Superman as the comic publisher has some of the most extensive collections of characters on Earth that aren’t just capes and superheroes. Netflix’s Sweet Tooth is probably a good example of this, so with Deadline’s new report that DC Animation is coming to Prime Video, keep that in the back of your mind as to the types of stories that could come to the streamer that already features the likes of comic book adaptations like Invincible, The Boys, and more. Though maybe a Batman: Caped Crusader can be saved after all?
