English Dub Review: Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! “The Whole Uzaki Clan Wants to Get Together!”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Sakurai gets a coupon for a gym’s free trial. There, he meets Fujio, the gym’s trainer, who also happens to be Hana’s father. Fujio then calls a family meeting to discuss the situation about Tsuki’s senpai.

Our Take:

One of the elements I enjoyed from Uzaki-chan is Hana’s dysfunctional family regarding their personalities and amusing scenarios. It wasn’t until its season one episode, “Tsuki Uzaki Wants a Thrill?”, that we got a small taste of her family’s unusualness from Hana’s mother. As the show progresses, we briefly see more of Hana’s relatives, mainly her siblings, including her younger brother Kiri. However, the series has not mentioned anything about Hana’s father. That is until this week’s episode.

“The Whole Uzaki Clan Wants to Get Together” finally introduces us to another estranged member of the Uzaki family, Fujio. Not only is he Hana’s father, but he’s also Sakurai’s trainer when Sakurai tries out the gym’s free trial. The rest of the plot sees Fujio hosting a family meeting at their household to tell them that Tsuki’s senpai, whom he’d assumed was a girl, is a guy. Their reactions to it were what I would expect from the zany family, with Fujio being the usual overprotective yet highly caring father to his beloved children. What’s even funnier is that Fujio and Hana’s siblings didn’t realize Tsuki’s senpai and Hana’s “boyfriend” was Sakurai.

The best reaction for me came from Kiri. He believed that Hana’s senpai, who’s responsible for the udon, was a woman in “I Want to Make Udon After We Hang Out”. Unfortunately for him, his hopes are dashed when he discovers that the senpai turns out to be a guy. What’s amusing about this moment is the “expectation vs. reality” of the scenario, which can work with the proper execution, and boy, did it work like a charm.

The episode puts the entire Uzaki clan in the spotlight after a tiny comical scenario involving Hana being pissed at Sakurai for not calling her by her first name. The result is another hysterically embarrassing misunderstanding that puts the characters in their awkward phases. Fujio’s personality is something we’ve seen before in other shows and movies involving an overprotective father. However, the episode portrays it in a humorous and entertaining manner that would only get even crazier later on. With the entire Uzaki family finally together under one roof, Sakurai will definitely need to stay on his toes to survive more of their absurdness.
