English Dub Review: RWBY: Ice Queendom “Do you have a plan?”

Overview

As Ruby’s party reaches the inner depths of the dream, Negative/Nega-Weiss attacks the three trying to eliminate them starting with Blake. Blake has a difficult time avoiding Weiss’ relentless attacks and is also hurt by hearing harsh words that she and the Faunus were enemies to her. Although they were able to find the “Nightmare”, they could not defeat Weiss, who had exploded in anger at Ruby and Yang’s betrayal and hatred toward Blake. The three had no choice but to retreat to the real world, however, they come up with a new plan to save their friend…

Our Take

What I really like the most so far in this plot is what they’re doing with all of the characters. Most notably, they gave more screen time with Penny and Sun after the nightmare plot was introduced and you get to see the visual symbolism of Weiss’s conflicted feeling towards Ruby, Yang, and Blake and how each of them is trying to understand her differently.

At some point, I knew there would be some form of 3D CGI imagery sooner or later. And they’re using it in fight scenes. It’s better if the characters are just too far away (or too small to draw them). But most of the antagonistic forces they’re up against in Weiss’s dream world are so far White Grimm, Nightmare Grimm Tentacles and ED-209-looking mech designs that seem easier and less Janky to animate in CGI.

Overall, I thought they would’ve saved Weiss by the end of this episode. But given the show’s title, I’m not shocked they’d drag this out in some way. We’ve now reached the halfway point and I appreciate the story they’re trying to tell so far. Now with their new plan that involves getting Jaune from team JNPR added to their 3rd and hopefully final attempt, Let’s hope their chances to save Weiss finally work out in their favor.
