Review: Mike Judge’s Beavis And Butt-Head “Spiritual Journey”

Overview

The spiritual journey that the title is referring to is the one Beavis takes when he thinks he sees the image of Jesus H. Christ in his nacho chip, thereby setting himself on a journey for spiritual enlightenment.

Butt-Head isn’t convinced that Jesus was on Beavis’ chip, but tags along as Beavis continues on his journey. The idea is, if Beavis can give himself to Jesus, he’ll score. The religious journeys see Beavis and Butt-Head join a Christian-affiliated abstinence group which clearly means the opposite of what the intended goals were, but they don’t know that. Eventually, Beavis knocks himself out and has a euphoric realization that God isn’t real, but maybe his new sign will take him down another path.

Our Take

I want a sequel episode RIGHT NOW with that last scene. Like, RIGHT RIGHT NOW.

In any case, we’ll get into more detail in the season review on how the show’s ninth season was very much a triumphant return for Beavis and Butt-Head, but this episode actually has me thinking that maybe 30-minute episodes could be a potential future here. Whenever this show goes longer, whether it’s in the form of a feature-length film or like this episode, there’s just something about the pace that I truly get into where it slows down a tad, and the seeds of comedic excellence get more time to bloom. I just could NOT get enough of Beavis interrogating religious leaders, the only problem was he didn’t see them all. I would’ve also liked to have seen Butt-Head’s continued persistence that the chip wasn’t Jesus, I kinda think he gave up a tad too early and would’ve liked to have seen him do what he could to prove the nacho isn’t real.

As for the cutaways this week, all of them were pretty good, with particular hilarity going towards the boys’ commentary regarding the two Youtube videos. Both may be the funniest to have aired all season.
