Adult Swim’s Shenmue Not Getting Second Season

The WB Discovery purge continues as we noted last week that a number of Adult Swim series would be leaving HBO MAX in a continuing effort to remove low-performing content from the streamer that includes the likes of Final Space (which is also being removed from Netflix international territories in 2023), Infinity Train, and others. Furthermore, series like Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Shenmue, the recently canceled Fena: Pirate Princess, Lazor Wulf, and Tigtone have all been removed from the Adult Swim website.

As for Shenmue, Adult Swim VP Jason DeMarco says no-go on a second season of Shenmue, which is another co-production with Crunchyroll not getting additional seasons. Fortunately, DeMarco says there are still several unannounced originals on the way for the Toonami lineup through not just the end of 2022, but looking out into 2023.

It’s worth noting that the buyers of WarnerMedia from AT&T are now in a lawsuit where AT&T may have oversold the value of the streaming service thereby inflating the price tag and mis-leading shareholders during the transaction. If a judge sees fit, the total cost of the buy against AT&T could be adjusted. Could that be enough money to save some of these series and movies from being COMPLETELY eliminated? Unlikely.
