SDCC2022: WB Discovery Trots Out Adult Swim, DC Animated, And More In First Comic-Con Under New Brand

Green Lantern World Premiere Panel

We’ll have a full review of the new full-length Green Lantern: Beware My Power later this week, but at the world premiere that went down at San Diego Comic-Con featuring the cast and crew from the film, longtime WB Home Entertainment PR representative Gary Miereanu announced a number of new full-lengths coming later this year and next.

A new Justice Society feature is currently in production as well as a new one called Justice League: Warworld. Other features include Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham.

Harley Quinn Season 3 Panel

Yes, there was a Harley Quinn season three panel at San Diego Comic-Con, but there wasn’t a ton we already didn’t know given that we recently reviewed the entire season that will premiere on July 28th with two episodes (that were also sneak peeked) that you can read here.

James Gunn has confirmed as a guest star for the upcoming third season of Harley Quinn where the famed director will be voicing himself in an upcoming episode. Sam Richardson was previously announced as having joined the series, so already, the third season of Harley Quinn is getting more epic by the day. Mad Hatter will be one of the new villains that will be featured in the upcoming third season of Harley Quinn which is slated to premiere on HBO MAX sometime later this year.

The new season will see Dean Lorey not returning as the showrunner in favor of new co-showrunners Chrissy Pietrosh and Jessica Goldstein who will be heading up a writer’s room that features more writers that are LGBTQ+ as a result of where the second season ended that saw Harley and Poison Ivy’s relationship that will see further exploration of Poison Ivy’s background in the show’s third season. Jefferson Friedman, the show’s composer, has teased a musical episode of some kind is on the way.

A spin-off series entitled Noonan’s, centered around Kite-Man, is also being developed. Harvey Guillén will be voicing Nightwing in the upcoming season of Harley Quinn.

Adult Swim Panels

I feel like the big announcements from Adult Swim are coming at the Adult Swim Festival happening next month. Much the same way Marvel will probably have more MCU details saved for D23, the same can be expected for Adult Swim Festival. Some things we learned, there’s no sign of a Pibby green light coming, and that 2023 looks to be a bigger year for new adult animation on HBO MAX than 2022. Other than the Vindicators panel (more on that in a bit), no serious Rick and Morty panel or info other than the duo showing up in the upcoming Multiversus game slated to release on July 2022. Here is the big news from each of the panels that went down for Adult Swim:

SMILING FRIENDS Discussion and Q&A

Mike and Zach teased the long-awaited Smiling Friends special which officially has a premiere date on August 6th @ 1130 pm ET/PT with HBO MAX getting the episode the next day. The second season will see the show attempt different animation techniques and we’ll get to dive more into the world of Pim.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal Season Two Discussion and Q&A

Primal has kicked off already, but Genndy says the future of the show very well could be something of an anthology down the road, other than that not a TON of news.

Rick and Morty: The Vindicators Screening and Q&A

The entire shorts series dropped at once and you can watch them here.

Tuca & Bertie Season Three Discussion and Q&A

Not much here either, just that there will be some twists during the course of the third season with some surprise characters coming along the way. Also, it looks like the producers are already talking about putting together a fourth season which is good news for a potential renewal.

For adult animation coming from WB Discovery, that’s the wrap!
