Review: Finance Family Bunker “Superfood Surprise”

Overview:

The Finance Family is enjoying their annual tradition of multicultural potluck night. With everyone prepared to represent a different region, the family enjoys a world tour with their tastebuds. But when Howie introduces his family to acai, they get excited to try a new superfood. Unfortunately, when Aidan eats too much acai, he becomes ripped. The only one who can stop him is Drone Nurse, who has earned a new robot suit after consuming another superfood.

Our Take:

That is a wrap on Comedy Central’s new five-part series of shorts, Family Finance Bunker. The comedy group Simple Town created the series that premiered on YouTube. The story centres around one of America’s wealthiest families surviving in a bunker after the apocalypse. Their maladjusted adventures are usually brought about by their own desire to drive one another crazy.

Thus far in Finance Family Bunker, the show has proven it has what it takes to entertain in more ways than one. The series is scripted loosely with plots showcasing wealthy white capitalists’ entitlement. Meanwhile, the performance of Simple Town tends to take things off the rails, and the voice-over artists’ improvisation tends to be some of the most side-splitting moments of the series.

This final short in the collection follows the script more than others but delivers some of the best subtle jokes. Subsequently, this was one of the tamest episodes in the pool, avoiding the ridiculous conclusions shown in previous shorts.

Regardless of the up and down nature of the miniseries, there is enough here to deserve a full series. Seriously, Comedy Central should give Simple Town all the money to make a full-on series. It doesn’t have to be Family Finance Bunker per se; the group could efficiently deliver something else just as entertaining.

Truthfully, the showrunners would be better off giving these comedians free reign to improvise. The off-script banter that illuminated throughout the shorts were some of the biggest laugh-out-loud moments. This would not be the only time an animated series devoted itself to improv, as Home Movies with John Benjamin and Brandon Small did it for years.

The uniqueness and back-to-basic comedy of Finance Family Bunker make it an honest stand-out in the ever-growing collection of animated shorts popping up on YouTube. And while many of the Adult Swim Smalls or Comedy Central shorts are well enough as they are, it would be a shame to see this powerhouse team of comedians not gain some clout from this hilarious five-part collection.

The future is uncertain, but Finance Family Bunker is complete and available to watch now. It would be worth your fifteen minutes to binge the short collection. Arguably, it would be one of the best’ try not to laugh’ challenges you can find on the internet.
