English Dub Review: The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made “Monsters VS Crazy Guild”

Overview:

A hoard of powerful monsters are sent to attack the kingdom of Wimberg. The castle is mainly being defended by Telbert Adventure Guild and they give surprising results.

Our Take:

The last episode left off with a warning of a monster attack. Well, the attack is happening now. The castle and entire kingdom is in danger, but they’re ready. The king enlists the help of Telbert Adventure Guild. His teacher, the great mage Barnabus, joins in as well.

The guild, the knights, the café owner we met a few episodes ago, and Seiichi’s party all put up a surprisingly good fight. They manage to defeat the monsters pretty handily, albeit with questionable methods. It’s no secret that the guild members are odd and they all have strange fetishes. From Eris the dominatrix to the guy flashing his junk during battle, this fight is quite the spectacle to say the least.

On the bright side, we do learn more about these characters. I actually find it interesting that the café owner used to be an assassin. Barnabus is revealed to be the principal of a magic academy and it’s shown that Seiichi’s classmates are training there. It’s about time their paths start to intertwine. We don’t get that yet and since there’s only one more episode this season, I’m not sure if it will happen yet. Regardless, at least the show’s finally taking those steps. We see a little bit of the fight on the frontlines too, but not much of note happens there. Honestly, it feels more shoehorned in than anything.

The best part of the episode is the fact that Seiichi doesn’t really do anything. He can’t learn the control skill for some reason, but that’s probably inconsequential. For the rest of the episode, he just watches the battle. He’s told not to get involved yet and his chance never comes. I’m glad he doesn’t fight because I think the other characters need the time to shine.

Unfortunately, the actual fight scenes don’t look all that great. They’re serviceable, but the animation does look choppy and the blood looks off to me. Action scenes haven’t been this show’s strong point, so I’m not surprised.

All in all, I can say this is the best episode of the show so far. Yeah, it’s mostly because of Seiichi’s lack of involvement. However, I liked seeing the other characters being featured more. They’re not all great or even good, but neither is Seiichi. There’s seemingly going to be another monster attack in the season finale, so we’ll see if that one goes the same way.
