Review: The Loud House “The Last Laugh/Driver’s Dread”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The Last Laugh

Luan thinks Mr. Coconuts is out for revenge when she replaces him with Lola in her act.

Driver’s Dread

Hoping to drive out to the outlets to meet Lori, Leni looks for alternative ways to get her driver’s license.

Our Take:

In the first episode, the storyline focuses on the relationship between Luan and her puppet, Mr. Coconuts. After Lola injured Mr. Coconuts with her car, Luan asks Lola to serve as her replacement dummy while Mr. Coconuts is out to get fixed. Unfortunately, Luan gets a strange feeling that her puppet friend isn’t too fond of this change when she starts ignoring him. Most of the humor consists of Luan accusing Mr. Coconuts of sabotaging their upcoming act. She and Lola believed he was responsible for ruining Lola’s dress, smashing their chocolate pies, and stealing the tires from Lola’s car. However, it turns out Luan is the culprit because she feels terrible for favoring Lola over Mr. Coconuts. She eventually learns to work with both Lola and Mr. Coconuts to provide double the laughs.

The second episode sees Leni hoping to meet up with Lori for a shopping weekend. Unfortunately, the only problem that stood in her way was that she didn’t have a driver’s license. Knowing Leni, I can easily understand why. The humor in “Driver’s Dread” consists of Leni attempting and failing to train for her driver’s test. She tries to have several people help her, including Lincoln’s fifth-grade teacher and Mr. Grouse, but their teachings aren’t very helpful. This resulted in her using Lisa’s self-driving device to help her pass her driver’s test. When the device malfunctions while meeting up with Lori, Leni will have to find the confidence to reach her destination.

Overall, both episodes provide plenty of decent laughs in their dummy shenanigans and driving fails. “The Last Laugh” is a humorous depiction of Luan worrying about Mr. Coconuts’ behavior after replacing him with Lola. “Driver’s Dread” is a solid episode that features Leni coming of age by learning to conquer her fear of driving by herself. Based on the second episode, I won’t be surprised if the show continues to have Leni drive the family van since Lori’s at college.
