English Dub Review: Requiem of the Rose King “Your name.”

By Marcus Gibson

June 05, 2022

Overview (Spoilers Below): Richard is determined to inaugurate a new reign with a banquet to remember, yet all is not as it seems. Anne is growing suspicious of her husband, Richard feels dissatisfied, and a mysterious figure is acting behind the scenes.

Our Take: Richard has accomplished his goal of becoming the new king of England. However, there’s still more work to be done before he reigns supreme. This week’s episode sees the kingdom preparing a special banquet for their new king. But not just any banquet. It’s a costume party where everyone can dress up as anyone they wish. Unfortunately for Richard, Anne has an idea of what they would wear to the party. While the plot centers on Richard’s banquet, it’s not the episode’s central focus. Instead, “Your name” focuses on Richard deciding which person his heart belongs to while feeling uncomfortable in his queen costume. Despite being married to Anne, Richard still has a strong urge to be with Buckingham, making Anne concerned about her complicated husband. Eventually, Richard wound up choosing Buckingham, who’s wearing a devil costume, which represents a potent symbol of Richard’s sinful personality. What’s even more enticing is that the episode finally showcases Richard and Buckingham sealing their relationship with a kiss. Unfortunately, this moment manages to strain Richard’s marriage with Anne even further, and he may be in massive trouble if she finds out. How long this relationship will last remains uncertain since Richard couldn’t help but compare his moment with Buckingham to spending the night with King Henry VI in one of the earlier episodes. My guess is not very long. By the way, Buckingham’s real name is Henry Stafford, which makes Richard’s comparison more impossible to ignore. The episode also gives us a glimpse of who the masked man is. The masked man is, in fact, Henry Tudor, the Earl of Northumberland. Again, why does this show have so many different people with the same names? Compared to him killing people in last week’s episode, Henry Tudor didn’t do too much here, with him only attending the party and being creepy towards Richard’s son Edward. Although, I do admit that his voice actor Carter Gill played off Tudor’s creepiness quite well. Maybe he’ll provide a more significant impact on Richard’s quest in the later episodes? “Your name” is undoubtedly compelling, and it’s not due to Richard’s costume banquet. Instead, it is because of Richard’s quest for love, which he might’ve found in Buckingham, and the symbolism represented by its animation and dialogue. However, it does seem that Richard’s newfound love for Buckingham may wind up cutting itself short if Anne discovers their “secret”.
