English Dub Review: Requiem of the Rose King “The light is overhead.”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Richmond’s schemes erode Richard’s support as the new king’s health declines. A visit from Jane brings unwelcome news that threatens to open a rift between Richard and Buckingham.

Our Take:
It’s no surprise that Richard’s new relationship with Buckingham is destined to crumble like his previous ones. We also see that the villainous Richmond still plans to overthrow the new king. But, of course, it’s not without the help of Queen Elizabeth’s sons, who are still mad at Richard for stealing the throne from one of them.
This latest episode shows that the series is about to pull no punches in its tragic elements during its final stretch, where Richard’s rule is on the brink of extinction. One of those elements showcased in “The Light is Overhead” is Richard’s poor condition, affecting his duty. After Jane is sent to examine his sickness, Richard comes to the shocking conclusion that he got pregnant due to having intercourse. Richard refuses to accept that theory since he believes men can’t get pregnant, but since he has a female body, he doesn’t have a choice.
The story effectively portrays this situation as to how people in the 15th Century would react. In today’s times, it wouldn’t be that much of an issue. On the other hand, having a man pregnant, especially a hermaphrodite like Richard, is one of the signs of that man being a demon in the 1400s. It’s an interesting and captivating scenario that might put the new king closer to his downfall.
But, of course, there’s also a matter of Buckingham, who desperately wants Richard to be by his side. In fact, he’s so desperate that he drugged Richard and chained him in his room so he could never go to York. However, he’s still concerned about Richard choosing the crown over him. So, after letting Richard go, Buckingham does the unthinkable by letting the Bishop out of prison and sending James Tyrell to kill Richard.
I always knew this relationship wouldn’t last forever based on Buckingham’s actions throughout the show. He killed the Warwick near the end of the series’s first half, and now he wants Richard dead because of his lover’s choices. If this isn’t the sign that he’s got issues, I don’t know what will. Buckingham is always nothing but trouble despite his desires, and this episode has no problem portraying that theory while delivering another good continuation of Richard’s quest for the throne. Boy, Richard will surely be pissed when he finds out his lover sent an assassin to murder him.
