REVIEW: SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS “Say ‘Awww!’; Patrick the Mailman”

Overview

“Say ‘Awww!’”

Frustrated that he’s seen as cute instead of evil, Plankton builds a robot to punish anyone who says “aww!”

“Patrick the Mailman”

Patrick accidentally crushes the mailman, so he and SpongeBob deliver the mail around Bikini Bottom.

Our Take

For the first episode, much of the humor and story are very Plankton-focused as he wants to be taken seriously as a threat. But due to his tiny stature, it’s hard to “Inspire fear” or evoke terror. As usual, Plankton proceeds to put his new robotic creation into action that starts off as a cute baby duckling called “Q-T-TT (Mathematical Pie symbol) until the mere mention of the word “awww” transforms it into a monstrous, mechanical Kaiju-like creature. Of course, Spongebob being the well-meaning dolt that he is indirectly causes chaos by bringing the robot duck to various populated places who are compelled to say “aww” at the cuteness of this creature and you kinda see where it’s going…

As for the other one, you thought Spongebob was a driving force of chaos? Patrick is somehow even worse. He’s well-intentioned in looking out for the mailman who is indirectly injured due to Patrick’s inability to comprehend how returning mail works, but made worse is his inability to read which is where Spongebob comes in who compares being the mailman to being “Santa” and wacky mail hi-jinx ensues with hilarious consequences.

Overall, both episodes were entertainingly fun and weird in different ways. The first one was more Plankton focused due to his Napolean complex with the introduction of this robot duck monstrosity and Spongebob finding a solution to stopping it without any sort of violence. While the other one worked with its physical humor and “comedy of errors” approach when proceedings escalated and felt strangely satisfied with its twist ending that felt weirdly appropriate…
