English Dub Review: The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody “The Raging Champion”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The Demon Lord’s companion, Sylphy, reappears in the modern world after several thousand years. A masked man tells Sylphy where she can find the Demon Lord. Meanwhile, the Magic Academy is preparing for its school festival, and Ard is asked to perform in a play in lieu of their Sword King Battle Tournament while also dealing with a threat to cancel the festival. Ard and the others start discussing the play when they’re interrupted by a huge commotion at the school.

Our Take:

Last week saw Ard defeating the dreadful Dragon King Elzard and saving Ireena from being sacrificed. That would mean Ard’s problems will become less problematic, but that isn’t the case. If you think keeping the reincarnation a secret from Lady Olivia is a challenge for the average Demon Lord, just wait until you meet another person from his previous life.

The episode introduces us to Sylphy Marheaven, a young woman who was a soldier in the Demon Lord’s army. After receiving information from a mysterious masked man about what happened years ago, Sylphy begins to track down the former Demon Lord. However, little does she know that Ard has had his own problems to deal with at the Magic Academy. The Academy is hosting a festival to celebrate its 100th anniversary, and the students decided to host a play based on Varvatos’ life. Unfortunately, they also have to deal with a threat from Lars Al Ghoul and Sylphy being a new student at the Academy.

Sylphy is a short-tempered warrior who seeks to best Ard when she discovers his reincarnation, which caught Olivia’s attention. Additionally, she sees Lydia as her big sister. When she sees Ireena scolding her for harming the other students with her temper, she swiftly realizes how much she relates to Ard’s lover. Based on the episode alone, Sylphy may get another big sister to look up to as the show progresses.

“The Raging Champion” is another enjoyable episode that properly introduces another new student, or Ard’s former soldier, in this case, joining the class. Despite her hot-tempered personality, Sylphy marks another entertaining character that may get some enticing development in the later episodes, especially when she’s about to find out what really happened 3000 years ago. The duel between Ard and Sylphy makes excellent use of its animation and flashy visual flair, resulting in it being one of my favorite parts of the episode. It also contains some decent humor, including Sylphy’s attitude and Ginny’s idea to host a maid cafe during the festival. I wonder how that’ll turn out for Ard.

The school festival plot element is nothing new since I recently watched Akebi’s Sailor Uniform. Still, the episode is serviceable enough to prevent me from raging out like Sylphy. With the masked man watching his every move and the festival on the horizon, being the center of attention for the girls in risqué maid clothing should be the least of Ard’s problems.
