English Dub Review: The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made “Artoria, The Calamity”

Overview:

Seiichi and Saria head to a village and register with a crazy guild to start their journey as adventurers. Artoria Grem shows them the ropes and leads them to do odd jobs.

Our Take:

Seiichi and Saria are on their way to become adventurers. Seiichi destroys a slime and the two get some new gear. Then they go to the nearest village to get IDs made. When they arrive, they are warned to stay away from the guild.

They head to the guild hall anyway and when they do, they see why they were warned. Most of the members are either mostly naked and/or very much into BDSM. Seiichi almost finds this out the hard way when he meets three mohawked members. However, he manages to escape before anything happens.

Once the two receive their IDs, Artoria Grem takes them to perform odd jobs. This is their first duty as adventurers.

Artoria introduces herself as “Artoria the Calamity.” Supposedly, this is because she has bad luck and this causes trouble to those around her. However, the “calamity” that happens in this episode doesn’t really seem to involve her at all.

A pile of lumber almost falls on top of a child, but that’s because the kids were playing and knocked into it. Besides, Artoria saved him in time.

Then her and Seiichi go to demolish a building. Seiichi barely touches it and it falls to pieces on top of him. Artoria blames herself as she tries to dig him out. Naturally, he’s fine and again, the building collapsing had nothing to do with Artoria. It’s because Seiichi is overpowered and borderline invincible, so it was bound to happen that way. To be fair though, I’m guessing Artoria doesn’t know that.

The two seem to adjust to the guild well and Artoria is friendly enough. It’s hinted at that she’s not normally like that, but we don’t see much rage from her.

We also learn that the students were sent to this world to participate in a war against the demon lord. Once again, we don’t see much of the other students in this episode. At least we learn the reason they were summoned in the first place.

This episode is a slight improvement over the last one, but not by much. I will say that Artoria is the most pleasant character the show has to offer so far. She was just introduced so I can’t say she’s good, but I already like her more than Seiichi and Saria. If there’s more of her moving forward, that’ll definitely help the show even if it’s just by a slight margin.
