OverviewSomething strange is afoot as Lupin finds himself adrift in another place and time; an ancient clock may hold the key to returning home but getting close to it won’t be easy…Our Take This time around we have the starting point of a 2-part episode written by famous Japanese mystery novelist Taku Ashibe who has an extensive track record of popular novels that have been published and translated outside of Japan such as “Murder in the Red Chamber”, and “The Horror in the Kabuki Theatre”. From what we the audience can gather, Lupin along with the people he knows are somehow teleported into the Showa era of Japan except some of the characters go by different names, but still, have the same archetypes in some form or another.Lupin is still himself although he’s known as the Gold Mask. Jigen works for the Japanese military as “Major” while Zenigata works for the Tokyo PD. Fujiko on the other hand goes by the name Black Lizard due to a tattoo she has on her left shoulder and Goemon’s appearance near the end raises more questions than answers…As far as I can tell, the major plot McGuffin that may have caused Lupin to be isekai’ed into this alternate timeline/universe is an ancient clock from a long-dead ancient Chinese Dynasty that may hold the key to helping Lupin return home…Overall, this was a pretty fun episode. Putting a character in a bizarre scenario such as going back in time to the 1930s is pretty interesting and seeing how each character is shown changes things up to help further set this story apart from past Lupin stories. I can’t wait for Part 2 as this has left me hooked and waiting for what follows!
