English Dub Review: Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest “ARIFURETA: From a Detour to the World’s Strongest”

Overview

Hajime, Yue, Shea, Tio, Kaori, and Yue take a detour to learn more about each other, their outfits, and Japanese otaku slang.

Our Take

Every anime seems to have some sort of pointless filler episode or “special” whether it’s a character in the summer setting for the sake of bikini-clad fanservice, or something entirely different. Arifureta now falls in line with doing something similar to this. Surprisingly, there’s nothing of character growth here other than comedic hijinks and fanservice moments such as Yue trying to teach magic with a weird description of how it works.

But a lot of it takes place before they drop off Myu back to her village with her mother in Mer-Town. And the women who accompany Hajime try on different outfits in a weird montage to see how they look in them and a funny ending where Hajime teaches them a weird slang word that’s mostly played for laughs, and something happens to Yue of her making a very personal demand.

Overall, while comical, this was a weird way to end the 2nd season after all the drama, death, and intense action that happened with Hajime and the others. I have no idea why they made this a “special” but this isn’t like the Kill La Kill special episode called “Goodbye Once Again” which was a DVD/Blu-Ray exclusive made to reward people who purchased home release. But at the very least, it did give me a few chuckles and it wasn’t an obligatory “summer special” that most anime often have where everyone is pointlessly in summer wear…
