English Dub Review: A Couple of Cuckoos: “I’m not going to marry you”

Overview: Nagi (Nicholas Andrew Louie) and Erika (Lindsay Sheppard) visit each other’s home, getting to know each other’s living situation.

Our Take: Future husband and wife, Nagi and Erika, are finally beginning to more deeply understand one another and their way of living as a result. Erika’s visit to Nagi’s humble abode and vice versa is an interesting and fun way to show just how much their lifestyle differs from one another. Erika’s befuddlement at Nagi’s small and quaint home along with Nagi’s amazement at Erika’s luxurious mansion is hilarious in their reactions as well as how different their lives might be should they have been raised by their own biological parents.

With neither one of them wanting marriage, it enforces their reluctance throughout until Erika meets Nagi’s parents. This leads them to blows in the most comical way with their cute combative personalities that are equally scary and insanely hilarious in their brashness. Erika being warmed by Nagi’s parents’ kind loving nature and her desire to get to know them makes her working up the courage and fearfulness all the more sweet and wholesome. Furthering their relationship, Nagi acts as a reliable partner for Erika, reassuring her just to be herself around them. It also shows how Nagi’s feelings are growing for her in him choosing not to reveal that he wanted to call off the wedding too, initially that is. Also, Sachi’s mixed feelings on her biological sister and her family warming up to her acts as an effective and looming discomfort throughout the episode. A factor that will no doubt enforce an intriguing introduction between the two, on both sides, as Erika seems to be similarly uncertain.

One thing that is not uncertain, though, is how much Erika and Nagi’s parents want their kids shacking up with Erika’s father renting them a home for two weeks. This development seems prime for some fun growing pains as they get used to living together as well as give them an energetic push in the right direction…or bedroom.
