Review: Dicktown “The Mystery of Lance’s Lesson” & “The Mystery of the Decades-Old Mystery”

Overview

“The Mystery of Lance’s Lesson”

John finds a new partner, who knocks some sense into John. It’s in the form of Lance of whom John now owes money too and needs to work until he can work off $900. The majority of this work is in the form of errands that John needs to do for Lance which includes buying a wagon, getting drugs, and being “dad for a day”. Through some sort of euphoric moment, John figures that maybe he has a long-lost mystery screwed up.

“The Mystery of the Decades-Old Mystery”

Finally reunited, John and David solve the biggest mystery of their childhood. Turns out, the culprit was right in front of John the whole time, he just chose to stamp it out of his memories.

Our Take

If you’re gonna watch one episode of Dicktown, the finale should be it. “Lance’s Lesson” was pretty typical, but the meta-level crazy of “The Mystery of the Decades-Old Mystery” was just as good as anything else on animated TV thus far this year. Like, THAT good. For fans of Tom Goes to the Mayor, a clear visual homage to the classic Adult Swim series that launched the careers of Tim and Eric can be seen, but the bigger victory was the thrilling conclusion to a five-week mystery that helps wrap up the second season of FXX’s newest animated comedy with a bow.

We’ll get into more specifics with the show’s season review next week, but Dicktown is absolutely strong enough to be a bankable new series for FXX. Some of the ideas don’t make sense, the two quarter-hours, lack of use of the ancillary cast, and even the recent change of time-slot all showcase a network that still doesn’t know what to do when it gets something new, but the quality of the content is there and certainly worthy of a third season.
