English Dub Review: Love After World Domination “The Truth About Dating”

Overview:

Fudou gets a lot of attention after a battle, which makes Desumi a little jealous. To make up for this, Fudou promises to take Desumi out on a date. The only problem is Fudou has no idea what to do on a date.

Our Take:

The first episode was a very good introduction to this wholesome forbidden love. The second episode moves on to the next step as we get to see what this couple is like on a real date. I have to say that they’re great together and entertaining to watch, even in awkward situations.

Fudou gets teased about not having a girlfriend during an interview after winning a choreographed battle against Desumi. This scene makes me wonder why the Gelato 5 don’t even try to hide their identities. Regardless, Desumi gets jealous and Fudou takes her on a date but he’s clueless.

He wears training clothes, takes her to the gym, packs nothing but protein bars to eat, and asks her a weird question about bugs. To be fair, this is all new to him, so he doesn’t know how to act. Fellow Gelato 5 member, Misaki Jinguunji, doesn’t help originally by giving him drunk advice. She later tells him to ignore that advice, but it’s too late.

When Fudou apologizes to Desumi, she says she had fun. She doesn’t care if they don’t go on a normal date. She’s very sweet and understanding, so much so that it’s easy to forget she’s a villain.

I thought this date was excellent. It’s out of the ordinary for a date episode, but I like that. It’s fun seeing these sweet and awkward interactions between our two leads. We even get a little tease of what may come later before they get interrupted.

At the end of the episode, we also get introduced to Desumi’s cat, Hellko. I’m a sucker for cats, so I was immediately drawn to Hellko. Not just that, but we also get a look at what Desumi’s home life is like. It noticeably changes from before she starts going out with to Fudou to afterwards. I thought that was a nice touch and I hope to see more looks at the characters’ home lives.

I’m also looking forward to see more dates between Fudou and Desumi. The dynamic may different now that they’re a little more used to the idea, but they have such great chemistry that any dynamic should work.
