English Dub Review: Odd Taxi “Don’t Call Me an Idol” “Let Me Hear You Say, “What the Hell?””

Overview:

It’s business as usual for privately-owned taxi driver Odokawa as he drives a variety of passengers around the city. Sometimes idols ride in his taxi, but don’t worry; he’s as tight-lipped as an authentic bartender.

Our Take:

I mentioned in my review of Attack on Titan that it’s impressive that a show like that gives one of the more realistic impressions of war. Well, just like that Odd Taxi, a show with anthropomorphized animals, gives us one of the better takes on what it means to be human. We all have flaws and make mistakes but that isn’t our whole story. We haven’t gotten the whole story yet but the tidbits we do get hint at something great.

Even the “bad” or “immoral” characters have understandable motivations. If you want excellent character writing then Odd Taxi is the anime for you. I can’t think of a single character that I absolutely hate, and can find something relatable about most of them. I would say, Shirakawa is my favorite so far but I am also a huge fan of romance, and despite his grumblings, I think Odokawa cares for her deeply. They too have issues to work out if that ship is to sail but the sparks and connection are definitely there. I absolutely love this show and I am so grateful that I get two episodes a week.
