English Dub Review: Deep Insanity THE LOST CHILD “take 05”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Shigure is always awkward around Kobato, and the rest of the team thinks he might have a crush on her. So, they scheme to set them up by sending Shigure and Kobato to get food for a team BBQ.

Our Take:
The episode brings us yet another partnership between Shigure and one of the members of Platoon 11. However, this one appears to have a unique connection between them, unlike Shigure’s previous team-ups. The show’s fifth episode, “take 05”, sees Shigure being paired with Reika Kobato for a special mission: to gather food for a BBQ party. Unfortunately, Shigure always appears to be awkward around her. That is until they discover they have a common taste in anime, with Shigure watching anime shows and Kobato drawing manga.
The episode also sees the team attempting to get Shigure and Kobato together because they believe that Shigure may have a crush on her. This plot element is something that we’ve seen in multiple shows before. Characters try to hook two people up due to their beliefs, and their plan falls apart later on. Fortunately, the plot didn’t go down that route. Instead, they portray Shigure and Kobato sharing their common interest and working together to defeat Nadia’s rabbit-like animals and a human-like Scarred. Not only does it make the formula watchable, but it also provides some decent development between the two characters, like in the previous episodes.
This could’ve been an episode where it’s nothing but formulaic filler, but it managed to include a couple more plot details that hint at future episodes. One of them is that Hayden is working for someone who wants him to capture EL-Cee. The other is that Hayden is actually Leslie’s former lover. These two elements helped set the stage for Hayden’s potential rematch against Platoon 11.
Overall, “take 05” is an entertaining partnership episode that nearly got overshadowed by its formulaic plot. If it weren’t for its brief hints of story progression and second half, I would’ve quickly called it off as a filler episode. Other than that, it’s a decent episode that might hint at Shigure and Kobato becoming more than just partners.
