English Dub Review: The Vampire Dies in No Time “Lewd Talk-a-Talk-Talk-Talk”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

There’s a new vampire in town, but he’s unlike any other that Ronaldo has encountered before. Rather than merely sucking blood, he has the power to make people speak only in lewd words, which bites Ronaldo in the butt when all he can talk about is boobs. As he infects more and more civilians, Draluc has to come up with a plan to thwart Mr. Lewdtalk. Later, Handa tries to sabotage his mother’s date with Ronaldo and then Draluc’s dad shows up worried about his son’s whereabouts.

Our Take:

The seventh episode of The Vampire Dies in No Time doesn’t mark a major turning point for the show, but it does introduce enough new stuff to keep it entertaining. From a perverted vampire to an awkward date, Lewd Talk-a-Talk-Talk-Talk has plenty of the show’s trademark humor going on—along with a healthy dose of head scratching.

The episode starts out with the title storyline, bringing Mr. Lewdtalk into town and letting him wreak his havoc. I was a little worried that it would turn out more crass and less funny, but the show handles it in a well enough way, with everyone in town revealing some of their secret fetishes. Some of them are kind of cute, like Hinaichi saying the lewd-est word she knows (“weewee!”) but other times are a little cringey, like Ronaldo talking to a group of kids about boobs. The ending is kind of lazy: everyone eventually gets infected and only then do they all band together to deal out some justice.

In the next segment, Handa’s mom wins a date with Ronaldo but her son isn’t having it. The Handa Ronaldo relationship has been one of the more potent overarching gags in the show so far, and this time around it’s still pretty fun. The best parts come when Handa’s mother is fawning over Ronaldo, with the Handa and Draluc scenes feeling a bit played out at this point. At least the ending to this one was cinematic enough, with Ronaldo having to take down a big old monster.

Finally, we wrap things up with a fairly mellow segment to finish the episode. Draluc’s father is worried about his son, and has come to check up on him. The only problem is that Ronaldo sent him away with some kids so that he could get more work done. It’s a cute gag for a few minutes, but there’s really not much to see here. It’s basically the same dynamic as when Draluc is there, with his father making silly suggestions and Ronaldo giving over the top reactions. There was a really funny gag though when they were interviewing people to try and track down Draluc’s whereabouts, and Handa tried to butt in—my favorite part of the episode perhaps.

In the end, this week’s episode of the Vampire Dies in No Time was a small step up over the standard comedy the show traffics in. There were a few fresh plot beats and even some genuinely funny moments that I didn’t see coming. It looks like the preview for next week’s episode will be even more interesting, as John has been kidnapped and all of Ronaldo and Draluc’s associates are helping hunt him down. Hopefully John takes longer to die than Draluc!
