Season Review: RWBY Fairy Tales Season One

Over the course of RWBY’s popularity even long after Monty Oum’s untimely passing, his creation has spawned various forms of media that attempts to be canon within the show’s lore, and unlike the “Woke” bullshit of the Kathleen Kennedy-owned Star Wars films that aim to kill the past, it doesn’t ignore previous stories that used to be pre-existing canon out the window in favor of its new ownership since WB currently owns Rooster Teeth now.

On the technical side, the European storybook-like art style captures what it’s going for, while firmly placing itself within the RWBY universe as it gets its point across in each of these specifically picked non-linear stories that despite being adapted from fictional fairytale book that takes place within the show’s universe, are well-paced and very rarely go beyond the 7-minute mark with Rooster Teeth going as far as to release them on Youtube and their own site for free.

While some episodes were devoted to adapting these stories, some made clever choices such as amalgamating two stories into one involving the Animal god regarding the Faunus, How the concept of 4 team members became a standard, and filling in gaps of information the origin story of RWBY’s upper-tier villain, Salem.

Of course, not every adaptation is perfect as fans on Twitter often accused Rooster Teeth of its hypocrisy of white-washing specific characters while pushing a “Diversity” narrative. Most notably in the season finale, “Warrior in the Woods” as in the original book’s chapter the female lead supposedly had dark skin yet for some reason the animators didn’t completely follow that which is weird for a site like Rooster Teeth to make such a last-minute change like this.

Overall, this was a passable show. Predictably we could see this finished after the 2nd season given how short the running time is for each story. But at the very least, It was entertaining to watch for what it was, as some of these stories could later play into future RWBY storylines. Let’s just hope they add them as DVD/Blu-Ray Extras into RWBY’s Volume/Seasons in the future.
