Review: RWBY Fairy Tales: The Girl In The Tower

Overview
Not every story has a “happily ever after”…

Our Take

This storyline is based on the 11th story taken directly from the RWBY: Fairy Tales of Remnant book. The primary focus this is more of a call-back to the Season 6 episode of RWBY known as “The Lost Fable” which became one hell of a game-changer but this time around we learn about Salem’s early years before her history with Ozpin, At least a more fleshed-out version of it…

While we previously learned Salem & Ozpin’s origin stories in that aforementioned episode, we never knew about the circumstance to why Salem was forcibly kept in the tower in the first place, why her father did it, and what motivated her to do what she did? We even learn about how every book she read may have conjured up the various ideas she had in sending out random notes outside her castle.

This was a decent yet slightly incomplete version of her and Ozpin’s origin story. But at the very least, we learn about Salem’s past before the events that later transpired in the “Lost Fable” episode. Given the history Ozpin has with Salem herself, he talks about how this form of propaganda works, as every fairy tale has a purpose, whether overt or hidden. To Ozpin, this is a reminder that the familiar stories we know are just small parts of a larger one. At the end of the day, It’s the storyteller who decides when the story begins and ends, and if you look far enough ahead, even a story with a happy ending may have your expectations played within the worst ways imaginable. I think when it gets to Ozpin’s Fairy Tale, this story would work better as a companion piece…
