OUR TAKE

Okay, I’ll be frank, I had this show thrown at me yesterday and I have no familiarity with it or its previous season. Maybe I’ll have time to go binge it sometime this week, but thankfully, the premise seems pretty easy to grasp on its own without much connection to the background. It’s a fantasy world, there’s a modern day looking restaurant that appears in magic doors, so fantasy creatures and people wander in and get to enjoy things like real people. Fair enough, easy to jump in and enjoy on face value alone, made clear by the first segment of this premiere by seeing a demon hunter wander in and gain a new fondness for cheesecake that I think we can all relate to. The food here is quite detailed here enough to make one’s mouth water, similar to another food centric series, Food Wars, though without the competition aspect or the literal orgasms by those who eat it. So basically it’s Food Wars but without the wars. So…just Food, I guess? I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if there was some sort of battle aspect in an episode down the line considering the fantasy and questing that is inherent in this genre.

But for now, it seems to be a very easy going and low stakes, just being about the restaurant staff and patrons as they encounter the place and enjoy the food that is offered. You don’t really need to worry about character arcs or development or much in the way of worldbuilding either (aside from possibly fleshing out the restaurant itself and why it exists) since it’s all about the food. The staff at least seem to have backgrounds and fleshed out lives, as seen with Aletta leaving work to cook for her…partner, I assume? And I imagine the guy who put all this together, whom I assume to be the chef, is probably going to get some backstory elaboration to him if he hasn’t already. But other than that, I expect this to be a pretty episodic show, though obviously not in a bad way. We’ll see how it goes or how it stacks up to the first season (if I ever get around to watching it) as it goes along, but unless it gets really boring or repetitive, I don’t expect it to not at least be a little fun. But I suppose we’ll have to wait for the next course to find out.
