English Dub Review: My Senpai is Annoying “Udon with the Occasional Full Moon”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Igarashi instantly regrets what she said while drinking with Takeda, but when he doesn’t really mind, she wonders if he sees her as a woman at all. Also, fellow co-workers Sakurai and Kazama begin their own office romance.

OUR TAKE

With how brief I remember the manga chapters being, I’m kind of surprised they’re able to make these into fully fleshed out twenty minute episodes, but they’re most certainly pulling it off. I don’t really expect this to have a heavily serialized story, since it seems to be pretty much just focusing on these two burgeoning relationships at this office and their respective supporting casts, but it does seem to be carrying on pretty seamlessly from the first episode, with what seemed like it would be a pretty minor event. Igarashi’s complex about her size and how she looks like a child mixed with her being genuinely touched by Takeda’s kindness seems to be brewing what will eventually turn into strong romantic feelings, so while she might be glad that he didn’t blow some brief drunken ramblings (that reveal more about how she feels than she herself is probably aware of), it also triggers her feelings about always being seen as something that she’s not, not made any better by others saying how her interactions with Takeda seem more like father and daughter than two adults. So basically all these things are primed to associate these feelings of what to be seen as an adult with Takeda being nice and a good mentor to make this rom com.

Through this inciting incident, we also get to meet a lot of the other characters who will be showing up more and/or becoming more important later on. The most important among those being Kazama and Sakurai, who will act as the B-Couple that will no doubt form much more smoothly than the main one but also be a distinct flavor of romance from them as well, especially since Sakurai seems to be the one initiating things towards Kazama, who will probably take awhile to warm up. From Igarashi’s side of things, we meet her high school friend Natsumi who clearly helped exacerbate her complex about her size, and her grandfather who is also insanely jacked but very protective of his granddaughter. Not sure if Igarashi just has no parents or they’re traveling or whatever, but that’s who we’re dealing with. But yeah, overall, this series is continuing to be quite fun and animated quite well, so I expect to have a pretty good time continuing with the remainder of this season. Or if it ends up sucking, it will at least be a surprise.
