“Scary Stories to Tell Your Cloud”

“The Pumpkin Pageant”

Mayor Peeve and the middle most Post compete in a rival pumpkin contest during an annual pumpkin pageant…

Our Take

For the first episode, we get the obligatory by-the-numbers “Let’s share stories during a blackout” episode that’s arguably been done to death in many shows as we’ve seen in past cartoons such as Regular Show, The Simpsons, and even Family Guy. But here, the scary stories reach new levels of absurdist humor and trippy visuals along the lines of “Uncle Grandpa”.

As for the latter, much of the humor came from the proceedings of the pumpkin judging contest and the wackiness of Mayor Peeve’s methods in wanting to ruthlessly win which predictably had hilarious consequences. It also had an unexpected yet funny Sailor Moon reference of all things.

Overall, both episodes were passable yet serviceable in different ways. The first episode was pretty standard but found ways to keep itself fresh and set itself apart from other shows that use the same story structure, while the other episode excelled mostly in situational and physical comedy with its wacky visuals and subtle references to other shows while managing to do its own thing.
