Review: Cake “New Year, New Me”

Overview (Recap of Sketches)

Poorly Drawn Lines

Reza Farazmand’s Poorly Drawn Lines, an animated program spotlighting the fantastical misadventures of Ernesto (Tony Revolori), Tanya (D’Arcy Carden) and Kevin (Ron Funches)—three best friends navigating early adulthood in a world where the strange and surreal are an everyday thing. Based off the comic of the same name, Poorly Drawn Lines is produced by Floyd County Productions and Fish Ladder Productions.

Kevin lets Ernesto know about a monster that senses bathroom snacks and now wants to destroy all until he gets cookies. Instead of fighting the monster, the crew has to use the half bathroom for a bit, especially after Cat gets the shit kicked out of him. That said, Ernesto has more important things to worry about, like his future. On a break, Ernesto heads to the half bathroom where he accidentally locks himself in. He calls Tanya for help who is waiting on an extremely long line for coffee. When she gets back, Tanya kicks in the door and gets Ernesto out who orders Kevin to clean that bathroom once and for all.

After a few drinks, the roommates go to war and clean the hell out of that bathroom, even saving Cat in the process. After the victorious battle, everyone heads to grab a bite to eat.

Swan Boy

Branson Reese’s Swan Boy, an animated program based off the comic of the same name from executive producers Alex Plapinger and Augenblick Studios. Swan Boy focuses on an anthropomorphic swan of low station and (in his finest moments) medium intelligence, who gets into trouble ranging from the mundane to the fantastic to the surreal.

Swan Boy and friends get into an accident off of the freeway which leads to a lawsuit. On the day of the lawsuit, we learn that this whole bit has come to pass over some sort of movie disagreement.

Walt

Walt sees a neighbor threatening to jump off of the roof, so he gets into superhero mode and canvases the building until he reaches the top and helps save the day. He’s a god damn hero.

Beings

From creator Dan Britt and executive producer Alex Plapinger comes a series all about aliens visiting Earth and visiting a local named Sam. One of them named Gglumbo even introduces Sam to his family that lives in a cave and called themselves “Bunyips”. The Aussies opt to help make them famous by taking their pics and putting them in a calendar, but the calendar company needs 12 months of pictures in order to publish and there are only eleven beings.
