Imagination Studios Teams Up With William Shatner To Adapt Books For Adult Animated Series

The 90-year old William Shatner is still going strong and now it looks like the one-time Captain Kirk is getting ready to dip his toes in adult animation. No, not for Star Trek: Lower Decks, rather an adaptation of his sci-fi/detective novel series Tekwar. The mixed-reality series will also having gaming components where viewers can use their mobile devices to become part of the actual narrative of the series.

According to Deadline who has broken the story, the animated adaptation is developed and written by Matt Michnovetz (24, Star Wars: The Clone Wars), TekWar is based on Shatner’s series of bestselling detective novels, the first published in 1989. The novels are set in the year 2043 and follow a former detective in futuristic Los Angeles who was framed for the crime of dealing an illegal mind-altering drug in the form of a bio-digital microchip. It poses a great threat to humanity and has the potential to become a virus that will lead to an unrecoverable future.

Our Take

This has Netflix written all over it. The streamer is attempting to get into gaming, so why not produce an adult animation series with a sci-fi bent that would help you furlough subscribers from one service to potentially another?
