English Dub Review: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun “Magical Beasts Attack”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

The Six Fingers begin their plan to destroy Walter Park with magical beasts and releasing all the prisoners to find Kirio. The students with Kalego try fighting off one of the beasts but find their powers don’t do much. Meanwhile, Iruma and his group find themselves trapped from the attack, with Iruma starting to feel an emotion he rarely feels: anger.

OUR TAKE

With the arc halfway done now, the festivities are truly underway, as the attack by the Six Fingers commences in earnest. Not only have the main villains of the arc made themselves known, but this is probably the most real stakes that this show has had, at least since the last time there was an actual threat to innocent lives last season. As much as I’ve enjoyed the school shenanigans and the tests and grades and what not, it’s also a nice change of pace to see that this is a situation where people could very well get hurt or killed. I mean, I’m fairly certain that no one from the Misfit class is in any actual danger here, but it’s still got tension. One of the teachers dying seems SLIGHTLY more likely, Balam being the most possible since Kalego still needs to teach them, but I’m not going to put any chips on that either. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that, while I don’t think anyone we care about is in any meaningful danger, it’s still interesting to see them all put in a situation that conceptually HAS the most danger we’ve seen them in up until this point. I swear this is not damning it with faint praise.

Anyway, much like the previous arc of trying to obtain access to the Royal One classroom, this episode shows off some powers from the bit characters and gives them a chance in the spotlight, which I think is always a plus for this show. And in this case, it’s actually some powers we didn’t get to see before and some expansion on other powers we saw but didn’t get a big grasp of. And like just like before, I think it’s to this story’s benefit to show off more characters and their abilities than just the ones that will get the main focus typically, so having three big monsters and three teams to fight them off is a good opportunity for that. Though inevitably, focus is going to turn to the main cause of this, the Six Fingers, most of whom I don’t expect to be super fleshed out, but at least enough to be an interesting fight or two. And with Iruma putting on his mad face, I imagine things will be taking an odd turn anyway, so I’m plenty looking forward to that. Next week, we begin the second half of this arc.
