English Dub Review: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun “The Miracle of Some Fools”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Despite getting every stamp from the teachers, Kalego tells Iruma that he’ll need a stamp from every FACULTY member before use of the Royal One classroom is approved. Thankfully, the rest of the faculty appear out of nowhere to provide those stamps, having been grateful for Iruma’s help in the past and returning the favor. Kalego relents and a big ceremony is held to celebrate opening the classroom, though Iruma returns to normal the next day, feeling pretty embarrassed.

OUR TAKE

That wraps another arc for this season of the show, but while I wouldn’t say it was bad, it definitely lacked the punch of the last end of an arc. The climax is essentially just showing the stamps to Kalego, him pulling a fast one, and that fast one being countered by the arrival of the rest of the staff. After that, it’s just the resolution of the events, by which point there isn’t much tension to follow. It feels like a fine enough payoff to everything that has been happening, but it feels like there could have been more time spent leaving people in suspense. But that’s alright, I guess, since it still all pretty much works. Kalego has been established enough by now as being sneaky in accomplishing his goals, hence pulling the “well, I said you needed stamps from EVERYONE” move, though it does have a little trouble landing since he has never been a very villainous presence in the series. In fact whatever potential for that there was got shot down hard when he was first turned into a cute summon bird back in the first few episodes. So it might have helped to introduce a new teacher for this antagonist role who could later become an ally…though that would just add one more bit character, so it’s a bit of a wash.

The reason for the Misfit class’s victory is also quite solid, showing that Iruma has been such a big help since he’s been there that he’s gained the favor and support of everyone in the faculty. This arc was very much about showing how even putting Iruma on an “evil cycle” wouldn’t necessarily make him evil, just more ambitious towards his goals of wanting to help people he cares about, and now that he actually has a direct goal in mind, the people that have come to know him and care about him are ready to jump at the chance to help. It’s quite wholesome and heartwarming in the end, especially as Iruma is quite embarrassed after returning to his normal behavior and starts apologizing, only to be told that everyone was doing what they wanted to, which meant helping him in this case. Hopefully this will lead to him being okay with taking more direct action as he builds his own character, and with two thirds of the season to go, we’ll see if that lands. And maybe we’ll get some more thrilling stakes than just what’s happening with the school classes and faculty?
