English Dub Review: Cells at Work: Code Black “Cardiac Arrest, Revival, and a Change”

Overview:

The cardiac event continues. Due to some external CPR and defibrillation techniques, the heart gets pumping again. RBC being the cell he is gets his butt to work to make sure all the oxygen gets delivered. For some reason a blood transfusion happens and RBC and his subordinate end up in a different body. Not sure if WBC made it with him…

Our Take:

This final episode flew by and usually, that’s a great thing but this time I’m not so sure. In the end, I was like “That’s it?” but if you stick around after the credits there’s one final scene. What seems like a blood transfusion happens and RBC and his kouhai get sucked up into a new body. I couldn’t tell if WBC made it with him and honestly that is super depressing.

I am guessing the studio must be fairly confident that there will be a second season to do that. Otherwise, they should have ended where they did before the credits. That was a super frustrating place to leave the season and I really dislike when shows do that. With most tv shows you know you will have to wait at most a year. With the anime industry, a second season is never guaranteed so this could be a long wait.

I think the episode was okay, it fell under the same issues that the rest of the season has. It doesn’t feel like any of the characters solve the problems of the body in most cases. There is always an external force helping them which makes sense but it’s still a little frustrating.

To be fair in the face of all of this RBC never loses his determination. He was waiting for the heart to start beating so he could rush to deliver the oxygen once everything was back up and running. Once again he was really the only character that got any focus.

I think my season review might be a bit more forgiving but I can’t be for this episode. It was so by the numbers I pretty much knew what to expect. Sure the “ending” was surprising but not in a good way. I just hope we get a second season to see what happens now. Really disappointed to see the strong start fizzle out like this.
