English Dub Review: Warlords of Sigrdrifa “Welcome to Tateyama Base!”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The final battle reaches its conclusion as the Tateyama Valkyries face Odin, Thor, and destroy the Pillar’s core. Claudia goes against Odin’s machine and they talk about his loneliness and her unrelenting determination to end this war. Miyako and the shield squad fight Thor as Sonoka deals with the deceased Valkyries.

Claudia’s song helped weaken the presence interfering with the command’s efforts to locate the core. Claudia defeats Odin’s plane in battle before bidding farewell to him. After the shield squad defends Miyako with their planes Miyako defeats Thor with a secret weapon. Meanwhile, Azuzu goes for the core of the Pillar as Odin awaits her. Azuzu serves as a distraction for Miyako who destroys the core and Azuzu ends Odin. After the battle, the Tateyama base gets two new recruits. The girls give them a tour of the base before setting off to the sky in their planes.

Our Take:

Warlords of Sigrdrifa ends on a happy ending with the Valkyries welcoming the new recruits to the Tateyama Base. They defeat Odin and destroy the Fuji Pillar with only a few casualties like the shield squad. However, the battle was simplistic and divided the girls into defeating Odin, Thor, and destroying the Pillar’s core. There was a bit of cooperation with Azuzu and Miyako, but Sonoka and Claudia complete their parts solo, and they aren’t seen until they return home together.

For starters, Odin’s words to Claudia as the only survivor on the battlefield because she’s blood-related to him surprised me. However, it fails to really connect since we’ve seen the other Valkyries survive in the battles. Odin being a lonely god instead of a god fighting with his denial was an interesting take. It worked in tying off his role as the main antagonist. Furthermore, the idea carries over to Odin accepting his defeat at the hands of Azuzu. However, Miyako’s comment on how he didn’t reach out for help was okay. We already got his solitude with his conversation with Claudia. Additionally, Claudia’s farewell to him as she defeats his machine had a better impact since she calls him father. On that note, I didn’t expect Claudia to fly through the machine Odin was piloting like her plane was invulnerable.

Then there’s Sonoka’s battle with the former Valkyries. That moment was a good show of her growth from being the crybaby to a more determined pilot. She goes against Sakura and Yayoi’s planes and wins. Then there’s Azuzu and Miyako who go against Odin in the tree with the Pillar’s core after Thor. This confrontation gave me a bit of a whiplash since Claudia defeated him moments ago. At any rate, their teamwork was good since the two have been together for a while now.

The aftermath of the battle was a good wrap-up with the girls welcoming the younger Valkyries to Tateyama base. The lax mood that the commander sets by clipping his toenails worked in conveying the carefree nature of the base. However, it’s not like we have any other base to compare it to the series. The Valkyries visiting the memorial with flowers was nice too.

Overall, this final episode was an average conclusion to an anime about cute girls flying planes and battling monsters.
