Review: The Movie Show Does Big Sharks

Originally billed as a “Review Show”, you’ll be hard-pressed to really compare The Movie Show to the type of Youtube vlogs or the increase in “Watch Party” reality series that you see all over television now. Instead, The Movie Show is more in the same vein as Comedy Bang Bang in that we get scripted bits that coagulate into almost a parody of the genre. Welcome hosts Deb (Adam Dubowsky) and Wade (Alex Stone), two puppet characters who hold dominion of a public access movie review that dish out hot takes on upcoming blockbusters and catch-up with the likes of the T-Rex from Jurassic Park to see what he’s up to (he’s not looking too well these days).

Like the TZGZ lineup, The Movie Show isn’t afraid to be crass on Syfy. A very throwback show in terms of the type of dialogue you get, personally, I prefer my cuss words like how I enjoy my steak…lightly salted. For “Deb”, this is mostly true. The designated movie nerd of the duo, Deb is passionate about the pristine condition of her Jurassic Park toys and often battles “Wade” on his silly movie opinions. “Wade” is a movie buff that, like most in Hollywood (or in this case, Modesto), didn’t quite land his dream gig as a director but he DOES get free movie screeners with his favorite genres that feature big explosions, fast cars and CGI monsters that destroy major metropolitan areas.

At first I was a bit critical of puppet characters mixing in with live-action, but “Randy” is pretty funny. After snorting the show’s very first guest, Randy becomes an out-of-control drug addict looking for his next fix which continues the show’s goal of being 2005 edgy which is exactly where the Syfy network wants to be as it continues to build it’s animation empire. The Movie Show needs some help in the joke-writing department, a lot of punchlines don’t exactly land and some of the hijinks might turn off more contemporary tastes, but their are segments that show promise for a series that fits snug in between TZGZ and Syfy Wire.
