Report: Sony Nearing Deal To Acquire Crunchyroll From WarnerMedia, Here’s What We Know So Far

Sony is nearing a deal to buy Crunchyroll for just south of a billion dollars at $957 million. It’s expected that the purchase from former Crunchyroll parent company AT&T is expected to be announced soon. Sources have told me that there is talk of combining Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Aniplex into one international anime streaming service, but branding hasn’t been decided yet. Furthermore, Crunchyroll’s VRV platform is expected to end by the end of the year, and WarnerMedia property Rooster Teeth is expected to be removed even before then.

Good news is I hear that negotiations of Crunchyroll content still being distributed to the likes of Adult Swim’s Toonami and HBO MAX is still very much on the table and shouldn’t lessen the original series coming next year. This includes Blade Runner, Junji Ito, and others. Also, expect Crunchyroll and Funimation (the latter of which has been announced) to be day one streaming apps for PlayStation 5 which is expected to drop on November 11th. VRV is expected to be killed off by the end of the deal.

Crunchyroll in partnership with AnimeNYC is getting ready to do a bunch of digital panels which kicks off Nov 17th and goes through Nov 20th.
