English Dub Review: Monster Girl Doctor “The Flesh Golem Who Hates Doctors”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Doctor Glenn and Sapphee are surprised when their clinic is visited by the famed Lady Draconness. The city council person asks them to help her bodyguard Kunai, a flesh golem who has lost her arm in a tussle with a bandit.

Glenn agrees, but runs into trouble with Kunai herself, who hates doctors due to the one who experimented and brought her into the world. She goes off looking for her missing arm herself, and winds up losing a leg as well. Luckily, Doctor Glenn along with some help from Lulala finds her absent appendages and makes everything right as rain again. But that villain is still on the loose, and Sapphee might be pregnant now?

Our Take:

The third episode of Monster Girl Doctor takes us further into the doldrums of Lindworm, to the scene of a crime. Lady Draonness is hunting down a villain with her bodyguard Kunai, but when they run into trouble they wind up visiting Doctor Glenn and Sapphee. The Flesh Golem Who Hates Doctors is a bit of a letdown coming off the high of last week and its world building. While it does open up some new avenues for the show to explore, it also felt a little anticlimactic once Doctor Glenn easily found all Kunai’s missing limbs.

Kunai herself is an interesting creature because she’s not like any monster Doctor Glenn has encountered before. In fact, Lady Draconness doesn’t even think of her as a monster, but a human, since the crazed scientist who made her took human parts and combined them into one form. The distinction between monster and man is blurred by her reveal, and it’s fitting that a freedom fighter like Draconness would be the one to hire Kunai as her personal bodyguard. I’m excited to find out more about Draconness, and I’m sure this week won’t be the last time we see her.

The overall plot for this episode felt pretty boring for the most part. While I was anticipating more excitement due to the robbery/villain/scoundrel opening, this episode really seems to serve as the most introductory of setups for a possible future episode where the thief is revealed more fully. This makes me believe there’s a reason that the thief is going after Kunai, but I guess it isn’t for the parts, since they were just thrown in the water to be found by Lulala. (Speaking of which, it’s kind of cool to see her again, but it also makes the world feel a lot smaller.) They weren’t even hard to find!

The third episode of Monster Girl Doctor may not be the most interesting to watch, but it did introduce some cool new backstory on Draconness and the criminal underbelly of Lindworm. Plus we got to meet a new kind of creation in the form of Kunai. It was definitely more of a setup episode, but that just makes me more curious to see where the series takes the criminal side of the story from here.
