Here is Every Appearance of Kang and Kodos in “The Simpsons-Treehouse of Horror I – XXX”

Kang and Kodos Johnson are two of the most beloved characters on The Simpsons even though their status as canon characters is up for debate. The “sisters” are recognizable to the fact that they have appeared in the comic books, video games, and even have their own amusement ride. The aliens have also made an appearance on Matt Groening’s other beloved show Futurama. However, besides a couple of random episodes, they have strictly been limited to appearing in The Simpsons annual Halloween specials, “Treehouse of Horror”.

Kang and Kodos made their debut in the first “Treehouse of Horror” all the way back in season two. Since then the writers and producers of the show have made an effort to assure that they make an appearance in all thirty “Treehouse” episodes. Sometimes they are the stars of the show. Other times, they are limited to brief cameos opening or closing the program. And, sometimes, their cameo is so minuscule that if you are not paying attention, they are easily missed.

Considering how beloved these strange characters are, we decided that they deserved some extra recognition. “Treehouse of Horror” is one of the best episodes each year, and Kang and Kodos are a significant part of its success. Therefore, we have gone back through The Simpsons archives to compile this list of all of Kang and Kodos’ appearances in the “Treehouse” series.

Enjoy, you foolish humans!

The world was first introduced to Kang and Kodos during that infamous first Halloween special. “Hungry Are the Damned” is that unforgettable segment from season two’s “Treehouse” episode. The Simpsons are abducted by the green aliens, and Lisa suspects that it is for nefarious reasons despite being told otherwise. The conclusion of the story has the aliens returning the family home while describing all of the great things that they have lost out on. In this plot, Kang and Kodos are portrayed as having positive intentions; however, in future episodes, they are seen as attempting to take over the Earth.

Kang and Kodos make another significant return in the second “Treehouse” episode from season three. In the first segment “Lisa’s Nightmare” the Simpsons comes into the possession of a monkey’s paw that grants wishes. Lisa utilizes her wish to bring upon world peace, which results in Springfield destroying all of their weapons. Witnessing from above, Kang and Kodos then take the opportunity to enslave the defenceless humans. The segment concludes with Ned resolving the invasion with his own wish.

With season four’s Halloween special Kang and Kodos were limited to a brief cameo. “Dial Z for Zombies” was a segment that featured Springfield being overrun with a zombie plague. Avoiding the catastrophe, Kang and Kodos make their appearance safely in their spaceship laughing at the demise of humanity. This shot of the pair observing Earth from the cockpit of their ship would be the first of a continual gag repeated throughout the years.

“Foolish humans” Kang and Kodos laugh their famous line once again observing Earth from their U.F.O. However, this time, the aliens receive their own attack. Following the events of the segment “Terror at 5 ½ Feet,” the same gremlin that haunted Bart on the school bus manages to reach space. As Kang and Kodos laugh at Bart for fearing an “imaginary creature”, the same beast begins banging on the outside of their own ship.

The aliens are often victims of the undergoing horrors happening in Springfield. In one of the most popular “Treehouse of Horror” episodes, Kang and Kodos make their regular cameos. In “Time and Punishment” Homer manages to discover time travel. Playing off the ‘Butterfly Effect Theory’, every move he makes in the past has ramifications in the present. Once again appearing from their spaceship above Earth, Kang and Kodos laugh at Homer’s inept ability to handle time travel. On queue, the alien’s heads are transformed to that of Mr. Peabody and Sherman from Rocky and Bullwinkle. The reference was playing on the idea that the classic cartoon characters often manipulate time within their own adventures.
