In contrast to the previous year’s Halloween special, Kang and Kodos help to wrap up “Treehouse of Horror XI”. The aliens show up just before the credits to complain about being left out of the special this year. Their insecurities get the best of them as they question if their “space phone” is working, or if they should have sent the producers a muffin basket. Thankfully, they get a call offering them the chance to be in an Old Navy commercial – to which they accept without really knowing what it is for.

In The Simpsons thirteenth season, Kang and Kodos were limited in their appearance to a non-speaking role. Quite the demotion from the previous years, this may be the aliens most minute cameo in the entire series. In the segment “Hex and the City” Homer captures a leprechaun in hopes to expel a gipsy’s curse. Much to his disgust, the leprechaun and gipsy end up kissing and falling in love resulting in them getting married. The wedding is full of cameos from creatures across all forms of pop culture. But, snuck somewhere in the background are our two favourite green slimy aliens.

Kang and Kodos return to talking roles in the fourteenth season, and once again help to close out the Halloween special. Back to form, the aliens once again are viewing the Earth from above in the aftermath of the segment “The Island of Dr. Hibbert”. With every Springfield citizen now transformed to animal mutants, Kang and Kodos cannot help but notice that the skull-shaped island looks exactly like their “number 4”.

In a strange turn of events, the fourteenth edition of “Treehouse of Horror” was aired in November – probably Fox’s fault. Regardless, Kang and Kodos are the ones to offer the meta-commentary on the situation. After an opening which sees Marge murder Homer in cold blood, our favourite aliens are once again seen observing from above in their spaceship. Criticizing The Simpsons for airing a Halloween special in November, Kang and Kodos are already well into their Christmas decorating.

Kang and Kodos get the chance to open the programming again in “Treehouse of Horror XV”. This time they are starring in their own fictional sitcom “Keepin’ it Kodos”. The parody plays on the cliché plot of their boss coming for dinner, in which the aliens serve up the Simpson family. Bart manages to survive being eaten whole, which leads to Kang and Kodos to adopt the parentless child. The segment ends with the “Treehouse” title card coming up to the theme of Perfect Strangers.

For the second consecutive year, the green tentacled aliens help to open up the show, this time destroying the entire universe. Kang and Kodos open up by watching an exceedingly drawl game of baseball. Fed up, Kang attempts to speed things up regardless of Kodos’s protests. When the baseball players become to fast for their own good they become a vortex which sucks in the entire universe including god himself. After Kodos complains about Kang’s mishap, the latter throws a sticky note on the blank white screen with the episodes title card.

In season eighteen, Kang and Kodos return to star in their own “Treehouse” segment. “The Day the Earth Looked Stupid” features the town of Springfield going into chaos after a radio production of Orson Welles War of the Worlds. With every citizen in the city getting naked and frolicking in the mud like animals, they vow never to be fooled by such things again. Kang and Kodos seize the opportunity to engage in their own invasion, in which Springfield fails to react to. Once again, the aliens are victorious, but this time with some regrets as they only wanted to rid the world of “weapons of mass disintegration”.

For the second consecutive year, the two aliens get to star in an actual segment of the Halloween special. Kodos take the stage as a stranded alien featured in “E.T. Go Home”. The obvious parody puts Kodos in all of the expected scenarios, including uncomfortably sitting in Bart’s bicycle basket. The segment takes a turn when Kang and the rest of Rigel 7 decide to attack Earth. This is also the only episode in which both Kang and Kodos die.

Despite being promoted to significant roles in the previous few “Treehouse of Horror” episodes, the twentieth season cuts back on the two aliens. In their second non-speaking role, Kang and Kodos are only seen dancing with the children in a parody of Charlie Brown titled “It’s the Grand Pumpkin, Milhouse”.

These could be considered the dark years for Kang and Kodos, as their appearance is again limited to a minor role. The twentieth “Treehouse of Horror” ends with a musical bang in a Sweeny Todd parody called “There’s No Business Like Moe Business”. The stage production is performed in front of an audience which includes our two favourite aliens. The conclusion involves the entire cast singing “Number XX” on stage. That is until they are shushed by Kang who quickly gestures to a sleeping Kodos.
